Consultation workshop for the presentation of the Draft National Background Pollution Paper for Georgia
On July 2nd, the ‘Blueing the Black Sea’ (BBSEA) workshop, in the context of the second round of consultations with key decision makers in four Black Sea littoral states including the Republic of Moldova, presented preliminary results of the National Background Pollution Paper for Georgia and collected essential feedback for the finalization of the works carried out by the World Bank analytical teams.
Following an official opening by Ms. Darejan Kapanadze, Senior Enviromental Specialist, World Bank and Mr. Nicola Bertolini, Project Director, Ambiente SPA, the workshop included a presentation of main results of the Draft National Background Pollution Paper to officials from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and from the National Environmental Agency of Georgia, focusing on:
- Pollution sources, state of pollution and pressure, presented by Ms. Nita Tkavadze and Ms. Ana Machavariani – Diagnostic Pollution Team
- Institutional policy and legal analysis, presented by Ms. Ekaterine Otarashvili – Legal team
- Methodology approach for Business-as-Usual scenario, presented by Ms. Diana Cocarta, Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering, University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest – Diagnostic Pollution Team
The final results that will be included in a Black Sea regional pollution diagnosis report, to be delivered in November.
Consultations with key decision makers will continue in the near future in Ukraine and Turkey. Another workshop has already been held for Moldova on June 24th.
Open consultation with local stakeholders
An online open consultation (survey) will be launched in July, seeking contributions from local decision makers, NGOs and civil society organizations, environmental experts and academia, legal and policy experts.
The open consultation will collect additional feedback and inputs from a broader set of stakeholders in Black Sea littoral states and Republic of Moldova, concerning the current state of pollution, national policies, action to be taken for pollution prevention, pollution hotspots, in order to have a bigger picture of local needs and priorities.
