CONSULTANCY SERVICES FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF WATERCOURSES IN LESOTHO AND ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL FLOWS

The general objectives of Classification of Rivers in Lesotho and Assessment of Environmental Flows Study are to develop a robust framework to describe the state of the aquatic environment (surface water, wetlands, and groundwater) that can guide the classification, monitoring and sustainable development of water resources of the country. The scope of the study may be divided into 4 Tasks. These Tasks are listed as follows and further elaborated in the following sections:

  • Task 1: Inventory of existing data and literature review (related to environmental flows (reserves) and river classification)
  • Task 2: Development of Classification System
  • Task 3: Determination of Environmental Flows
  • Task 4: Development of Operational Monitoring Framework

Services provided:

  • Develop hands on training for operational staff
  • Development of workshop about environmental monitoring aspects
  • Undertake the relevant literature review concerning environmental flows/ecological flows/ecological reserve and river classification
  • Identify characteristics of water resources in Lesotho and baseline mapping using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Establish guidelines and procedures for determining different classes of watercourses
  • Engage stakeholders in review and finalization of classification system
  • Apply an appropriate method to establish and determine the requisite environmental flows/ecological flows/ecological reserve
  • Develop a pragmatic monitoring framework (including indicators and monitoring plan)
  • Develop mechanism to collect, store and disseminate data collected from monitoring efforts
