The development of the environmental monitoring strategy for water, soil and radiation in the island of Malta

Description of the activities
The project was divided into two different main phases, phase 1 consisted on solely research and analysis of the environmental legislative framework in force, in order to identify and define the best strategy for environmental monitoring in the long-term for the four environmental areas: water, air, soil and radiation.
Subsequently, phase 2 provided for the implementation of environmental monitoring campaigns, specifically:

  • Air continuous air quality monitoring campaigns, with gravimetric samplers.
  • Water monitoring campaigns for chemical, physical and biological parameters, both for coastal and inland waters.
  • Soil monitoring campaigns for soil and marine sediments
  • Radiation monitoring campaigns for coastal waters and soils.

At the end of this phase, a feasibility study was performed, with cost-benefit analysis for the development of a laboratory on Malta.
